How to Choose the Right
Shape for Your Cushion

A few standard shapes fit most cushions, and every cover we make is reversible. Here's how to find the right shape — and what to do when your cushion isn't a perfect fit.

Choosing the shape for a custom cushion cover

Start With One Question

Do you already know the shape of your cushion? Everything else follows from that.

You know the shape

Pick the matching shape

If your cushion is clearly a rectangle, circle, triangle or L-shape, choose it and tell us the size in the designer.

  • Rectangle, circle, triangle, L-shape and more are all one click.
  • Enter the measurements and we cut & sew to fit.
You're not sure

Choose Template

Don't guess. Template is made for cushions the standard shapes don't describe — and we'll work the rest out with you.

  • Pick Template and measure the overall size.
  • We confirm the details with you after you order.

Golden rule: when in doubt, go Template

A cover that truly fits beats a shape that was guessed. If you're not certain which shape your cushion is, Template lets us match the real geometry — and you get free advice along the way.

The Shapes We Make

Nine options, from simple to custom. Most cushions are one of the first four.

Rectangle

Straight sides, right angles. Width, depth and thickness.

Circle

Round seat or bolster. Diameter plus thickness.

Triangle

Three straight sides — great for corners and nooks.

L-shape

Wraps a corner with a cut-out. Overall size plus the notch.

T-shape

Tucks around a chair arm or leg.

Trapezoid

Wider at the front than the back, yet symmetrical left to right.

Right Triangle

A square cut along the diagonal for tight corners.

Right Trapezoid

A trapezoid with one square corner.

Template

Any irregular or custom shape. We guide you through it.

Reversible & Symmetric

We cut every cover to be reversible, so we prefer shapes you can flip over.

Two-sided by default

Because most cushions are used either way up, we like symmetric shapes. A shape that's a mirror image left to right looks right from both sides — a lopsided one often can't be flipped.

Flipping a reversible cushion from front to back

Symmetric by design

Left side mirrors the right, so the cushion works either way up.

Reversible

Flip it front to back or over — both sides look great.

Symmetric trapezoid

When the front is wider than the back, this hugs the seat and flips cleanly.

When the Sides Aren't Perfect

A tiny difference is normal. A big difference changes the shape you should pick.

Small difference

Treat it as a rectangle

If the sides differ by a millimetre or so, it's not worth giving up symmetry. Choose Rectangle and enter the average.

  • A tiny variation is invisible in the finished cover.
  • You keep a clean, reversible shape.
Larger difference Measuring a symmetric trapezoid cushion

Try a symmetric trapezoid

When one end is clearly narrower than the other — around 10mm or more, easy to see — a symmetric trapezoid fits better while staying reversible.

  • Wider at the front, narrower at the back.
  • Mirror-image left to right, so it still flips.
Still not sure? Choose Template and we'll help you work out the best fit.

Irregular or Curved? Choose Template

Some cushions don't fit a geometric description. That's exactly what Template is for.

1

Measure the maximum size

Measure the largest overall width and depth, plus the thickness. Enter those with Template in the designer.

We need the biggest numbers — not a guess at the average. Bigger is safer than small.
2

Send us the shape

Either works — choose what's easiest for you:

Sending a template or projection photo of your curved cushion

Mail a template

Make a physical template of the cushion and post it to us.

Send a projection photo

Photograph the cushion straight-on and we'll measure the key points.

3

We confirm the details

With a Template order we guide you through the key measurements and confirm the zipper opening after you order.

When the shape is uncertain, our team works through it with you — no guesswork.

Questions

Straight answers.

What if my cushion isn't a standard shape?

Choose Template. It's built for irregular and custom cushions — we confirm the exact zipper opening and details with you after you order.

My cushion is slightly narrower at the back. Which shape do I pick?

A difference of about a millimetre is fine as a rectangle. If the gap is clearly visible (around 10mm or more), a symmetric trapezoid — wider at the front than the back, but mirror-image left to right — fits better.

Why do you prefer symmetric shapes?

So the cover is reversible — you can use either side. A cushion that isn't a mirror image left to right often can't be flipped.

How do I measure a curved cushion?

Measure the largest overall width and depth, plus the thickness. Choose Template, then send us a physical template or a straight-on projection photo and we'll map the curve for you.

Which shape should I pick if I'm not sure?

Template. Measure the maximum size, choose Template, and we'll work out the geometry with you — with free advice along the way.

Can I get a fabric sample first?

Yes — free fabric samples are shipped to your door, so you can feel the fabric before you order.

Found your shape?

Pick your shape and fabric, and we'll cut & sew a cover that fits perfectly — on either side.
